Part 1 | Part 2
Never mind the name – The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding – this is a zoo, and a very nice one at that. And don’t worry about the name either. There are no giant pandas on display breeding, that stuff actually goes on in the research area behind closed doors.
Some travel guides say the base is outside of Chengdu, but it appears that greater Chengdu has encircled the facility and it is now in the suburbs.
The research base is everything it could be, and more. Disney’s Kung Fu Panda movie is actually playing on a giant screen at the gate. The grounds are green, treed, beautiful and manicured. A comparison would be the San Diego Zoo, but this zoo has only two types of animals – pandas and red pandas.
Souvenir stands stock everything panda, including (my favorite) panda paws that can be worn over the hands.
Though the research base is not quite the Great Wall of China, it’s not far behind for things to see and do in China, and the world for that matter. Overall, this is a world-class place to visit. And credit the Chinese government for doing this place right.
