The car chase on the frozen lake in the James Bond movie Die Another Day was shot in Iceland at Jökulsárlón, commonly known as Glacier Lagoon. The lagoon is a popular tourist attraction in southeastern Iceland near the town of Hofn. Amphibious boat rides on the lagoon are available to tourists in the summer months.

The still waters of the lagoon are dotted with icebergs that break off from the Breiðamerkurjökull Glacier. A narrow inlet connects the lagoon to the Atlantic Ocean. The ocean salt water that mixes with the lagoon water usually keeps the lagoon from freezing solid as seen in the movie. For the movie, a dam was constructed in the narrow inlet to keep the salty ocean water out and within several days the lake surface was frozen solid.

Four Aston Martins and four Jaguars, all converted to four wheel drive, were used in the sequence. Several cars were wrecked during filming according to our Extreme Iceland tour guide. Stunt drivers did all the driving, and Pierce Brosnan, who played Bond in this movie, did not have to go to Iceland.
